Heliocare is a capsule that contains an extract of the plant Polypodium Leucotomos (PLE).

The Polypodium Leucotomos plant has been used for generations in South America as a folk remedy for skin conditions. Interest in PLE grew out of a desire to find substances that limited the toxicity of ultraviolet light on skin. This fern extract, the active ingredient in Heliocare was found to decrease the negative effects of UV and this effect is considered valuable in protecting normal skin.

How does Heliocare work?

UV [from the sun or from a sun lamp] has many detrimental effects on the skin: it can directly cause DNA damage, and it can create so-called "reactive oxygen species" (ROS) or "free radicals".

ROS are high energy molecules that collide with proteins and lipids in the cell and cause direct cellular damage. This damage is responsible for the effects of UV on skin: premature aging and a prematurely lined and worn appearance. Heliocare helps protect the skin from such damage.

Heliocare Studies:

Studies reveal that the antioxidants in Heliocare work against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation to decrease sunburn response, including a significant reduction in the number of ultraviolet induced sunburn cells and DNA damage. Heliocare contains antioxidants which are shown to mop up free radicals before they damage important cellular proteins.

Heliocare is taken daily. It is active within half an hour of the first dose (unlike many oral antioxidants which take months to build up sufficient levels). Also, because Heliocare is taken orally it is effective in protecting cells deep in the skin - topical antioxidants are usually ineffective in protecting cells at this level. Damage to these deeper cells is responsible for many of the signs of photo-aging (e.g. wrinkles.)

Heliocare Research:

Importantly, over 12 years of research has confirmed the antioxidant and photo-protectant properties of Heliocare. This research has shown that Heliocare is effective when taken in capsule form or used on the skin. Also confirmed is that Heliocare in capsule form has no known harmful side effects. Oral photo-protection like that found in Heliocare is now the focus of much attention, and has been hailed as the 'photo-protection of the future'.

Heliocare Directions: Take TWO Heliocare capsules daily before exposure to sun. In case of prolonged exposure to the Sun, take a third Heliocare capsule approximately 4 hours later. Do not exceed the stated recommended daily consumption of three Heliocare capsules per day.

Heliocare Precautions: Do not exceed the stated dose for Heliocare. Do not use Heliocare during pregnancy. Store Heliocare below 25C. Dietary supplements such as Heliocare should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet. Store in a cool dry place. Keep Heliocare out of the reach of children.
