All medicines have risks and benefits. Sometimes new risks are found even when a medicine has been used for many years.
If you have any concerns about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Action and use:
BUTACORT 50 Aqueous Nasal Spray contains a corticosteroid (Budesonide) used for the short-term prevention and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hayfever).
Dosage: (unless otherwise advised by your doctor)
For adults and children over 12 years: Initially ONE or TWO sprays into each nostril TWICE a day (morning and night), then after 2 to 3 days, ONE spray into each nostril TWICE a day.
For patients with only mild initial symptoms, a dosage of ONE spray into each nostril TWICE a day may be sufficient.
BUTACORT is not intended to give immediate relief. Generally it will take a few days to achieve the full effect. It is therefore important that you use your spray regularly at the times recommended. If you miss a dose, just take the next dose when it is due.
Treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis should start before the exposure to allergens, if possible.
Instructions for use:
Shake the bottle and remove the dust cap.
Blow your nose gently.
Close one nostril by holding a finger against the side of the nose, hold the bottle and put the nozzle in the other nostril. Tilt your head forward slightly and keep the bottle upright.
Start to breathe in slowly through your nose. While you are breathing in, squirt a spray of fine mist into your nostril by pressing down firmly on the collar of the bottle with your fingers.
Breathe out through your mouth. Repeat step 4 to take a second spray in the same nostril.
Remove the nozzle from this nostril and breathe out through your mouth.
Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the other nostril.
After using the spray, wipe the nozzle carefully with a clean tissue or handkerchief and replace the dust cap.
Cleaning:
Your nasal applicator should be cleaned at least once a week or more often if it gets blocked. To clean, remove the dust cap, press gently upward on the white collar and the nasal applicator will come free. Wash the applicator and dust cap under lukewarm water. Dry and replace.
If the nasal applicator becomes blocked, remove the dust cap, unscrew the pump mechanism from the bottle and soak it in warm water for a few minutes. Rinse under lukewarm water, dry and reassemble on the bottle.
Do not attempt to unblock the applicator with a pin or other sharp object.
Side Effects:
BUTACORT will not cause drowsiness.
Occasionally sneezing attacks may follow immediately after the use of BUTACORT. Slight secretions of blood may appear in the mucous.
If either of these side effects persists, or any other side effects develop, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
Other less common side effects include itching of the nose, throat and ears, sore throat and dry mouth. There may also be a strong smell of spray. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if unsure.
