What is Bio-Oil?

Bio-Oil is a specialist skincare product developed to help improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Bio-Oil's advanced formulation also makes it extremely effective for numerous other skin concerns.

During preening, a duck secretes oil from its preen gland and distributes it over its entire plumage in the familiar twisted neck action that one associates with ducks. This preen gland oil creates a thin, non-greasy layer on the surface of the feather without which water would not pearl off and the bird would struggle to swim. Clearly an oil with interesting properties – an oil that protects the feathers from damage, maintains their sheen and suppleness and yet is neither sticky nor greasy!

Upon studying the composition of preen gland oil, skincare scientists discovered that it was possible to develop a laboratory copy of this unique “dry” oil for use on human skin. And, after a number of years of research and testing, the breakthrough was finally made... PurCellin Oil was introduced as a scientific recreation of preen gland oil.

Will Bio-Oil also help old scars?

Although the appearance of younger scars has a greater chance of improvement within a shorter period of time, the appearance of significantly older scars may also benefit from the regular use of Bio-Oil. In a recent user-trial, 82% of the respondents reported an improvement in the appearance of both old (over 10 years) and new (under 6 months) scars in only 4 weeks.

Can Bio-Oil help to prevent the appearance of stretch marks during pregnancy?

Definitely. Bio-Oil nourishes the skin, keeping it supple and helping to promote elasticity and, if used regularly during pregnancy, helps to prevent the appearance of stretch marks. Bio-Oil should be applied from at least the second trimester for optimal results.

Bio-Oil should be applied to the scar only once it has matured i.e. The skin has completely healed. Bio-Oil should not be applied to broken skin.

How often should I apply Bio-Oil and how long will it take to work?

Bio-Oil should be massaged into the affected area twice daily for a minimum of 4-8 weeks before an improvement can be noted. The response time will however vary, depending on the purpose for which you are using it, the area on the body, age, natural skin colour, and skin type.
