Western societies have huge health problems. The money spent on healthcare runs into billions of dollars. Disease rates for diabetes, heart disease and cancer are definitely not slowing down. Lost economic productivity through disease also costs billions of dollars. But the human misery associated with disease and the loss of loved ones is incalculable.

If we look at societies that adhere to traditional dietary principles we see that longevity is greater and health problems are minimal. Yet in the West, where food is mass produced, heavily processed and stored dubiously we see an epidemic of diseases, mostly related to obesity. We highly recommend that you watch the documentary “Food Matters” for further illumination on this point. See trailer below...

There are tried and true weight loss strategies and almost all of them work, if you stick with the programme.

Calorie control – It makes sense if you watch the input, you don't have to be so concerned with the output. Simply represented, food is fuel. If you control the amount of food you eat you don't need to be so concerned with how you burn it off. International weight management companies such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, target calorie control and help to keep their clients motivated.

Exercise – Without any doubt, an important part of the good health equation. But exercise sounds like punishment so make your physical activity as much fun as you can. A brisk walk for 15-20 minutes a day with a friend is good for your physical and mental health and it burns calories. If your weight is out of control, we recommend starting easy with walking and build up distance and speed as you feel more comfortable doing so. If you like the social aspect there are many sports where you can enjoy physical activity and have social contact.

Weight Management Supplements – There are many products in this category and they usually target specific areas such as appetite, metabolic rate and absorption of fats or carbohydrates.

Appetite suppressants target the desire to eat and help reduce cravings. Some have glucomannan powder, which when in the stomach swells up to help give the feeling of fullness. Hoodia products target the appetite and some combine hoodia with glucomannan.

Other products contain herbs such as Ma Huang or similar to speed up the metabolic rate in an effort to burn fat quicker. Herbs such as Garcinia Cambogia help prevent the conversion of excess carbohydates into fat. While Chitosan, a crustacean product aims to block fat absorption much like the drug, orlistat (Xenical).

A new product called Green Coffee Bean extract, guides the body to burn fat in preference to carbohydrate and protein sources. The active ingredient of Green Coffee Bean extract is chlorogenic acid, which encourages the use of stored fat as the source of fuel. Chlorogenic acid also supports stable blood sugar levels to assist in the control of appetite and food cravings.
