Propolis is a mixture of resin like substances collected by bees to protect the hive. Sticky resins collected from plants or tree saps are collected by bees and returned to the hive where it is used to seal up gaps or holes in the physical structure of the hive. Gaps in the hive allow access by other small animals and microorganisms. Sealing these gaps prevent access to the hive interior and prevents bacterial or fungal attack.

The chemical structure of propolis differs from hive to hive and is dependent on what is growing in the surrounding countryside. If there are lot of pine trees nearby for example, the propolis would be expected to have a higher proportion of pine resin. Propolis is rich in bioflavonoids and other chemicals that have antibacterial and antifungal properties. An old beekeepers’ remedy for sore throats is to allow a piece of propolis to dissolve slowly in the mouth.

Propolis has been used as a medicinal treatment for a long time and it appears to boost immunity, treat sore throats and assist general well being. Recent investigation shows that it may have anti-tumour activity and further research is being made into this interesting area.

Propolis may be taken internally as a capsule or sprayed directly on a sore throat as a spray and it is often found as a component of throat lozenges.
