Taking your own Blood Pressure at home

Have you ever been surprised by a high blood pressure reading at the Doctor’s surgery?

Remember that a single high(ish) reading in isolation does NOT necessarily mean you have joined the ever swelling ranks of the newly diagnosed hypertensives (those with elevated blood pressure).

Many factors can influence that reading at the Doctor’s surgery such as
·         Have you recently had a cup of coffee
·         Were you rushing to keep the appointment
·         Are you frustrated that the appointments are running late
·         Have you eaten recently
·         Have you recently finished a cigarette
·         Are you nervous about the potential blood pressure reading

The best way to establish whether you have elevated blood pressure is to be able to measure your own blood pressure in the comfort of your own home, relaxed, unstressed, and the readings taken in a consistent manner.
If those blood pressure readings are consistently elevated then it is certainly time to talk to your Doctor about possible causes and possible healthcare steps you can take to improve those numbers.

If after making those suggested lifestyle changes your blood pressure readings are still consistently high, then it is probably time to investigate taking one of the many prescription medicines that lower blood pressure.

Your Doctor will guide you on what the best choices are for you.
